NICOLE ROMA THURRELL,
CEO, Director of Education
Recipient of the Massachusetts Award for Excellence in Science Education, Nicole is a passionate educator who loves turning people on to strategies for caring more skillfully for their fellow human beings.
She has degrees in Psychology and Recreation Therapy from the University of North Carolina and has been a Wilderness EMT since 2001.
She worked in many aspects of wilderness therapy for nearly a decade - expedition leader, health director, director of admissions.
She has also been an adventure racer, a raft guide, high ropes facilitator, a clinician for kids with Autism, a Waldorf high school teacher, and a mom.
Nicole is such a solid teacher and has dual talents in both the medical field and teaching! She has great activities to help cement the information in her students heads while bringing potential scenarios to life. Her anecdotes from her years of experience bring the knowledge to life and help it stick. She clearly stays current on the latest best practices and, having taken WFA with her twice, she updates her students to ensure we are in the know as well. I highly recommend taking any of her courses!
This was the most engaging first aid class I've ever taken. It was also the most beneficial. Nicole did an excellent job of making the class hands on and allowing us to use critical thinking and problem solving, something missing from most first aid classes. She also treated every student in the class with the respect and truly set up an atmosphere where we were free to ask questions without judgement.
I have taken classes with Nicole on multiple occasions in various settings. She is an incredibly talented teacher, tailoring the content to the audience and communicating effectively and clearly while maintaining engagement. You can tell she is passionate about the topics as she never sounds scripted and has very honest and natural answers to questions as they come up. Any course you take will be worth your money and your while.
