Wilderness First Responder

The Wilderness First Responder course is an in-depth medical training for rescue professionals and leaders who work in situations where advanced care and additional resources are out of reach or unavailable or because a major disaster has overwhelmed the medical system. While students will complete their course of study with a huge mass of knowledge, emphasis will be placed on developing leadership skills, critical thinking, and good judgement.

Course Content

This First Aid course is designed to teach participants to prevent, recognize, and treat the following illnesses and injuries:

  • Bone injuries and Splinting
  • Athletic Injuries
  • Head Injuries
  • Eye and Facial injuries
  • Dental Emergencies
  • Spinal injuries
  • Chest and Abdominal injuries
  • Heat exhaustion/Heat stroke
  • Hypothermia
  • Frostbite
  • Dressing for survival
  • Severe allergic reactions
  • Altitude illness
  • Lightning
  • Contaminated water
  • Mosquitos, Ticks, and Disease
  • Spiders, Bees, and Wasps
  • Venomous snakes
  • Hazardous mammals
  • Hazardous marine animals
  • Hazardous plants
  • Respiratory illness
  • Gastrointestinal illness
  • CPR in the Wilderness
  • Pregnancy and wilderness activities
  • Survival and evacuation technique

This course uses many real-life scenarios to dramatize illnesses and injuries. The scenarios allow the participants to repeatedly practice in a simulated stressful situation and therefore integrate the skills learned during the classroom format.

This course includes CPR for the Healthcare Provider
